An Analysis of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

December 12, 2014

I suddenly realized I have a lot to say about Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Hopefully some of it is useful to you!

In the notes to the Youtube video, I mentioned that I left out a really interesting thread in this analysis: the way the lyrics keep coming back to place and time. If you run them back to back by theme, it’s easy to see:

Out of sight
Miles away
Near to us

Next year
Next year
Once again
Olden days
Of yore
Once More
Someday Soon
Until Then

What a terrific song.

And then for good measure, I feel it’s necessary to add the definitive version, which has a truly gorgeous underscore by Conrad Salinger, arguably the best film Orchestrator in history.
